It has become part of our vocabulary when talking about the momentum of our lives . . . . Over forty years ago Phillips launched the compact audio cassette at the 1963 Berlin Radio Show and our relationship with music has never been the same. Durable, inexpensive, and portable, the new format was an instant success. By the 1970s, we were voraciously recording music onto blank cassettes. It allowed us to listen to, and, in effect, curate music in a new way. Privately. Mix tapes let us become our own DJs, creating mixes for friends, lovers, and family, for parties and road trips. Artist and musician Thurston Moore looks back at the plastic gadget that first let us make our own compilations. Over eighty home tapers, including artists, musicians, actors, writers, directors, comediennes, talk show hosts, and, of course, record store employees were invited to tell the stories behind their mixes. From the Romantic Tape, to the Break-up Tape, the Road Trip Tape, to the "Indoctrination" Tape-the art and text that emerged was of the mix cassette as a new way of re-sequencing music to make sense of our most stubbornly inexpressible feelings-a way of explaining ourselves to someone else, or to ourselves. On the cd front we can expect another release from the Wally Shoup/Paul Flaherty/Thurston Moore/Chris Corsano quartet. Thurston and Lee will hopefully release their live recording with Nels Cline and Carlos Giffoni titled 4 Guitars Live at Luxx Cline:Well, if you've been checking out this site for awhile, you know that this 'live' recording has been looming for some time. Well, word has it that a different label (can't remember who, sorry!) will finally release this totally accidental event which occurred in Brooklyn 2 or 3 years ago. The Williamsburg club - Luxx - isn't even happening anymore! Originally, there were supposed to be 2 duo guitar sets: Thurston and Carlos, Lee and me, but things were running so late that Thurston suggested we combine forces and go home before 3AM. Someone ended up recording it. So get ready, it's going to finally emerge! I don't even remember much about it, save that it had some really good parts.... Watch this space for the label revelation. Lee also collaborates with Cline and Marina Rosenfeld on Live at Tonic, NYC (Atavistic Out Trios # 5 CD) Cline:Another accidental 'live' recording that seemed to have merit! I put this gig together with SY guitar star Ranaldo and turntablist/conceptualist/nail polish guitarist (and art star) Rosenfeld. It got taped. We liked it!. Two new Lee books should be published this year. The first is Road Movies: Tenth Anniversary edition coming January 2005: The literary equivalent of the dark and noisy waters of Sonic Youth's early work, the language of Road Movies mirrors the beauty of the band's emotive walls of noise. As the title suggests, large parts of the book are inspired by time spent on the road with Sonic Youth. His words evoke the strange surprises and almost out of body clarity that occurs during travel. Interspersed with grainy photographs of road side fireworks stands, cigarette machines, and tractor trailer wheels, the book recalls the everyday things that, when taken out of context, become absolutely extraordinary. In this way he tells, in flashes reminescent of the absolute freedom attained in the literature of Kerouac and Bukowski, the story of one restless mind's journey across and through America. The last pages of Lees Lengths and Breaths also mentions: "A full length book of his (lee) writings on Moroccan travels is due on early 2005." Fans waiting to Jims long awaited next solo album and to the second Loose Fur album can enjoy Jims music in the meantime on Orourke/My Cat Is An Alien split lp that will be released on Opax Records. Jim will also be featured on the next White Out album: WHITE OUT is happy to announce the release of their new album "China Is Near" on the All Tomorrow's Parties label. The album drops on January 31, 2005 and features Jim O'Rourke and William Winant.

Sonic Youth, initially comprising of guitarist /
vocalists Thurston
Moore and Lee
Ranaldo, guitarist / bassist / vocalist Kim
Gordon and drummer Richard Edson, were formed in New York City in 1981. A product
of the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the group had their roots in abrasive,
experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having previously worked with the
experimental composer Glenn Branca. The band were joined in 1985 by drummer Steve
Shelley, and have now recorded 14 albums together, as well as many side and solo
projects. Their work has been consistently challenging and innovative, and they
are widely regarded as one of the most intriguing and influential bands of their
time.
